Irons

Most people reading this article probably realize that a typical set of golf clubs consists of golf irons ranging from 3 to 9, wedges that include pitching, gap, sand and lob, a driver, 3 wood, and perhaps a few "rescue" clubs as well as a putter. The total clubs in any golfer's golf bag can not exceed 14 clubs so sometimes you can have some and not others.

These days depending on your level of play, a lot of golfers will eliminate 3 and 4 irons in favour of rescue clubs. A "rescue" club is a combination of an iron and a wood and can be very easy to use which is why they're so popular. These days everyone should have at least one in their golf bag.

In choosing a set of golf irons, a golfer must consider their skill level, swing speed, and their size. Probably, the most important for any golfer is that the irons look good as you look down at the ball. If you don't like how they look, you will probably not be happy with them.

One of the first places to go when looking for new irons is a major golf retailer! Generally, they will carry all brands of golf clubs and most prices. Look at them all and hold them in your hands as you narrow down what you like! What works for one person might not work for another. Price enters into the equation and you should probably buy at the level you can afford. Quality is very important with golf irons as the most consistent and best designed are the most expensive, generally.

The next step is to review these clubs with either a knowledgeable staff member at the store who sometimes happens to be a golf professional or an actual outside golf professional! These individuals will ask the necessary questions about you and your game to help them steer you in the right direction. Ultimately, you will agree or disagree with his or her recommendation!

There are several methods to help you reach the final purchase stage. You have to try and hit some golf balls, if a swing monitor is handy you should try and use it. This will register swing speed, etc. and is very helpful. Basically though, it's how the golf clubs feel in your hands and how they look to you. Other factors to consider which will be determined by the swing monitor are shaft stiffness, better players typically use stiff shafted golf clubs but not always, Cavity backed cast clubs versus forged "player" clubs are to be considered although most of you should use the game improvement cavity backed irons. Prices can range from $ 500 to $ 1000 or more and some graphite shafted golf clubs can be higher than that. The older the player the tendency is to graphite shafts in your irons for a softer feel.

When selecting your wedges, consider that all of us golfers use our wedges a lot. Each of us should carry a pitching wedge and a sand wedge but many players use "gap" wedges which is in between the pitching wedge and sand wedge as far as distance is considered and typically has a 52 degree loft. These days a lob wedge is so important for hitting short high shots within 60 yards or so from the green. You need to experiment as to what wedge selection is right for you! Many good players carry 4 golf wedges in their golf bag!

Lots to consider when selecting golf irons but remember golf is fun and a good set of irons that suit you will make golf even more fun. Good Luck!
